Good-bye Yankee Stadium, We’ll Miss You!

Just as our economy has come to the end of the Gilded Age another era is ending, we must say good-bye to “The House that Ruth Built,” Yankee Stadium. After 85 years as the iconic home of baseball the doors have closed and the stadium went dark for the last time. This sports fan is sad to see it go.
I never had the privilege of attending a game in person but I am a purist and don’t agree with newer and bigger is better. I grew up going to Mariners and Seahawks games in the Kingdome (I know, you can all feel sorry for me now for being subjected to Seattle sports) and then watching them tear it down to build Safeco Field and Qwest Field. I was at the ribbon cutting ceremony for Safeco and attended the first event (a concert) held in Qwest but I’m still not a believer. True sports fans attend the games to cheer (or boo) for their team, eat the greasy food and just enjoy the experience. These new stadiums being built are taking that away. Come on, $10 for a beer and a sushi restaurant in the stadium.
Sporting events are a chance for parents to pass down traditions and teach the love of the game, but it’s all getting too commercialized. Most families can’t afford to take the entire family to a game and season tickets are just out of the question. Is that really smart business to alienate your fans? No! So here’s my advice to team owners:
Remember those that came before you! Those stadiums and traditions have served for generations and yes maybe some modernization is necessary, but don’t reinvent the wheel. Stop thinking about your wallet and think about the fans.
