I’ve heard of dedicated athletes, guys willing to do whatever it takes to help their team win, but this is just stupid. Trevor Wilkre, senior offensive lineman for Mesa State College, had his pinkie amputated on Wednesday evening just to be able to finish the season.
Wilkre severely dislocated his finger in practice on Tuesday when it caught on another players jersey. He tried to convice the trainers to just put the bone back in, tape it up and let him continue but they shut him down and sent him to the hospital. Doctors told Trevor that they could save the finger with surgery and pins, but his season would be over. Wilkre decided to just cut it off instead, having his finger amputate that night.
Excuse me? You play Division 2 football at a no name school and you want to lose your finger for the rest of your life just to play your senior year? That has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. If this guy was playing at USC or University of Alabama and had a chance at the NFL then, maybe, I could see the sacrifice, but to finish Div. 2 ball, I don’t think so.
According to The Daily Sentinel, Wilkre says, “This team means the world to me. … I would have no problem taking a bullet for any of these guys. I love ‘em that much. This is my bullet.”
Well sport, that bullet must have hit you in the head.
